If you see a “Client ID Already Exists” error, SmartVault detected two client records with the same Tax ID, even if their names or client IDs differ. This error often occurs when importing clients from different tax software or manually creating similar records. To fix it, you’ll merge those records into one so all documents and details stay together under a single client.
Why This Error Occurs
SmartVault checks Name, Client ID, and Tax ID to spot duplicates. If two of those differ but the Tax ID matches, the system won’t know which record to use and throws this error. Merging records combines aliases (alternate names) and folders under your chosen “primary” client, resolving any conflicts.
How To Fix This Error
To resolve the Client ID Already Exists error, merge your duplicate client records by following our dedicated guide: Merging Duplicate Clients.
